A win is a win, I suppose, but I expected more from Mike Jones against Henry Bruseles in Saturday nights main event on Fox Sports Espanol. The unbeaten Philadelphia welterweight showed some nice moves and quick hands in taking the unanimous 10-round decision but we now know that he isnt the big hitter he has seemed to be.
Bruseles fought well and he was competitive, crouching low, keeping his hands up, jabbing and letting enough punches go to stay in the fight. Jones never looked like stopping him and didn't appear to hurt him at any time. It was a smart-boxing performance but not one to set the pulse racing.
I dont want to be too critical of Jones. He won comfortably on the cards, and Bruseles was tougher than I had anticipated the Puerto Rican boxer had come to fight and he was doggedly determined. I had the sense, though, that Jones wasnt fighting all out it looked to me as if he was content to do enough to win rounds and cruise to a decision when a concerted attack might have produced an emphatic conclusion.
