Unbeaten Philadelphia welterweight Mike Jones showed impressive hand speed as he overwhelmed Irving Garcia, of Puerto Rico, in five rounds in the ShoBox main event.
Garcia proved stubborn early as he jabbed, hooked and tried to land right hands, and Jones suffered a nasty welt under the right eye. Once Jones opened up at full blast, however, the fight became one-sided.
It is true that Jones landed a low left hook in his finishing barrage in the fifth, but Garcia was already out of the fight. Referee Randy Neumann either missed seeing the punch or simply felt that the fight was over at that point. Strictly speaking, Garcia should have been given a time out in which to recover, but it would merely have prolonged the inevitable.
