The show keeps rolling along for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who headlines the latest installment in the Latin Fury PPV series on Saturday night when he meets Argentinas Luciano Cuello in a 10-round junior middleweight bout in Tijuana.
After 39 fights without defeat, Chavez, now 23, is still being matched with care. He is meeting the type of opponents who can test him but are not serious threats to beat him.
Cuello is 24 and he, too, is unbeaten, with 23 wins in a row although only 10 by stoppage. He has mostly been meeting very limited opponents but he does have wins over a couple of Argentinean fighters with respectable records. Cuello soundly outpointed Americo Sagania, who had lost only one bout up to that point, in a 12-rounder, but he had a harder time with Alejandro Falliga, whom he defeated on a majority decision.
I havent seen Cuello, but I did get a look at Falliga when he was matched with Andy Lee in a middleweight fight, and even allowing for the fact that Lee was much bigger and hit much harder I thought that Falliga looked an ordinary fighter. So, the fact that Cuello had a struggle with Falliga indicates to me that he doesnt pose much a danger to Chavez.
We should realise here, though, that no one is saying that Chavez is a world-beater. He is a young man who puts on entertaining fights and because he is the son of the great Julio Cesar Chavez there is always going to be an interest in juniors career.
I am expecting a convincing win for Chavez, either by decision or a late-rounds, wearing-down stoppage although it might not be a stroll in the park. Argentinean boxers are usually durable and a couple of them have pulled off big upsets in Germany this year but the people guiding Chavez's career are most unlikely to have made a mistake in making this match.
