SATURDAY A.M. PREVIEW:

I thought that Hector Camacho Jr. was just going to fade away after some lacklustre showings and an unseemly weight gain, but the people at Top Rank are giving him a chance. Camacho, 29, is featured on tonight’s PPV show from Mexico in a middleweight 10-rounder against the Minnesota trial horse Kenny Kost.

I think the idea is fairly clear, with a win for Camacho leading to a fight with tonight’s main-event attraction, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. This could be sold as a sort of “revenge of the son” type of fight, seeing as how Camacho Sr. was pasted by Chavez Sr. in Las Vegas 16 years ago.

Although the junior Camacho doesn’t have his dad’s ability there are some similarities: the same southpaw method with quick, flicking jabs setting up the left hand.

Camacho weighed in at 163 pounds for tonight’s fight, 10 pounds lighter than for his last appearance, so he seems to have recaptured some enthusiasm for boxing: a Chavez fight and one assumes a career-highest purse is obviously a big incentive.

Kost is a tough, game fighter but an in-shape — or even somewhat in shape Camacho should be a bit too talented for him.

RESULT: Camacho unan. dec.
