No betting line was offered by the sportsbooks but ShoBox has an interesting chief supporting bout on Friday with the unbeaten Archie Ray Marquez of Albuquerque, NM, taking on Juan Santiago, of Denver, in what should be a fast-paced and entertaining eight-rounder.
Each has boxed on ShoBox this year. Marquez comfortably outpointed trial horse Derrick Campos in January while Santiago lost a split decision to the unbeaten junior welterweight Vernon Paris in a spirited battle in May.
Santiago was meeting a naturally bigger and more talented man in Paris but he fought hard and well, and Santiago’s frequent bursts of two-handed punching made this a very close fight. I am glad to see Santiago rewarded with this, his second appearance on ShoBox.
Marquez has scored 10 wins in a row and he had an extensive amateur career, while Santiago apparently had no amateur background to speak of, so the Albuquerque boxer might seem to be the favourite on paper. I think Santiago can win this, though. Santiago is a strong-willed young man and he has fought tougher opposition than Marquez has been meeting. Although Santiago has had several fights in the junior welter division he says he will be strong at the match weight of 133 pounds — and he did box at 130 pounds last December when he lost to the undefeated Eloy Perez.
While Marquez is the more polished boxer, Santiago brings a gritty, no-frills, busy-punching style. I lean towards Santiago outhustling and outworking Marquez for a close win on the scorecards.
