Kessler -225; Ward +200
Over 10.5 -150; under 10.5 +130
Once the United States ruled boxing’s heavier weight divisions. Those days are just a fading memory. Showtime’s Super Six tournament in the 168-pound division has demonstrated the rise of European fighters. Undefeated Olympic bronze medallist Andre Dirrell lost a split decision to Carl Froch in the U.K., former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, another Olympic bronze medallist, was knocked spark out in the closing seconds of his fight with Arthur Abraham in Germany and his career is in doubt. Will it be more of the same in the closing stage of the tournament’s opening-bracket bouts when Andre Ward, the Olympic gold medallist, challenges Denmark’s WBA champion Mikkel Kessler in Ward’s hometown of Oakland, CA, on Saturday?

Fragomeni +130; Erdei -165
Over 11.5 -220; under 11.5 +190
Sometimes when a fight is made it takes one by surprise. That’s how I feel about the WBC cruiserweight title fight in Germany on Saturday between Giacobbe Fragomeni and Zsolt Erdei.
My first thought was to wonder what on earth Erdei is doing boxing at 200 pounds. He was Olympic bronze medallist in the middleweight division, and it’s not as if he was a big light-heavyweight when he turned professional. Indeed, looking at Erdei’s undefined physique, the thought crossed my mind that with a big enough effort he could have got down to the 168-pound limit. Yet Erdei has given up his WBO light-heavy title to move up in weight and “seek new challenges” as his promoter, Universum, puts it.

Munroe -450; Maludrottu +300
Over 10.5 -195; under 10.5 +165
Rendall Munroe, the European 122-pound champion from Leicester in England, keeps the sort of schedule that is unusual for top boxers today. When he defends his title against Italy’s Simone Maludrottu on Friday it will be Munroe’s fifth 12-rounder in 14 months. He is a throwback fighter who seems to stay in fighting shape year-round, and he also holds down a job with his local council in Leicestershire as a bin man (refuse collector for U.S. readers).

Gomez-110; Soto-Karass -110
Over 9.5 -185; under 9.5 +155
SATURDAY A.M. LAS VEGAS ONSITE UPDATE: Nevada commissioner Keith Kizer confirmed last night that the Jesus Soto-Karass and Alfonso Gomez camps have agreed to eight-ounce gloves for tonight’s fight instead of the 10-ounce gloves normally used in Nevada for welterweight fights. Every indication is that Soto-Karass will be coming out looking to do damage and Gomez has taken up the challenge by agreeing to the eight-ounce gloves. If this develops into a war it might favour Soto-Karass more than Gomez. My original selection of the slightest of leans towards Gomez has had me second guessing myself, and a little voice has me leaning slightly the other way this morning. I will leave the preview as written but this is a toss-up and I am not expecting the fight to go the full distance.

THURSDAY UPDATE: Fight cancelled; it appears that Laleye made last-minute demands for more money; Hatton Promotions told him where to go — on an early flight home.
You could call Rob Norton a late bloomer. The veteran from Stourbridge in the English midlands is 37, but he gave one of his best-ever performances in his last fight when he survived two knockdowns to defeat the three-time national amateur champion David Dolan in a gruelling struggle for the British and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles.

Sometimes an upset is so shocking that the boxer who wins finds himself the underdog in the rematch. This happened in fights such as Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson II and in the return bouts between Vernon Forrest and Shane Mosley and Nehomar Cermeno and Cristian Mijares. The feeling in the boxing fraternity was that the favourite would get it right second time around, which is the prevailing sentiment when Sam Sexton meets Martin Rogan in a rematch for the Commonwealth heavyweight title in Belfast on Friday, with Sky televising in the U.K.

Austin +120; Williamson -140
Over 8.5 -120; under 8.5 +100
Recycled heavyweights meet on Saturday’s show in Las Vegas when DaVarryl Williamson takes on Ray Austin in a WBC elimination match.
It’s surprising to think of either getting the chance to box for a championship after Austin’s second-round collapse against Wladimir Klitschko and Williamson’s dreary defeat against Chris Byrd. Promoter Don King is giving them what must be surely a last opportunity and now it is up to the fighters. If they turn in a 12-round maul, the prospect of the winner getting a title fight would be seen as an embarrassment, but if one of them can win in exciting style he will have made a case for himself — well, sort of.

Camacho Jr. -180; Campas +140

THURSDAY UPDATE: : Hector Camacho Jr. came in 5 1/2 pounds overweight for his 10-rounder against Luis "Yory Boy" Campas, a match that takes place on Friday in El Paso. This means that Camacho had a seven and a half pounds weight advantage at the weigh-in. Is it going to be an advantage, though? Camacho came in overweight fore his fight with Omar Weis seven years ago, gave a dismal performance and was clearly outpointed. Campas looked in good trim at 152 pounds. I'll leave the preview as originally written but what we now have is a middleweight against a junior middleweight — who knows whether Camacho's extra poundage is going to work for or against him?

Ian Napa, considered one of the finest technical boxers in Britain at any weight, seemed to grow old overnight in his last fight when he was soundly outpointed by the French Olympic representative, Malik Bouziane. The widely scored defeat cost Napa his European bantamweight title and raised speculation whether he is now, at 31, a fighter in decline.
